Ajmer

Popular for the famous Dargah Sharif, Ajmer is one of the closest getaways from Jaipur and is visited by tourists all year round. The dargah of Khwaja Moin-ud-Din Chishti is visited by Hindus and Muslims alike. Ajmer is a historic city with small, crowded streets and a busy daily life. Despite that, it is one of India’s most visited tourist attractions on account of the famous dargah. Best time to go: Best time to visit Chittorgarh is during the months of October to March. The winter months are extremely pleasant here.

Sightseeing: Chittorgarh fort, the structure that the city is named after, is its prime tourist attraction. Built by the Mauryans in 7th century AD, the Chittorgarh fort stands atop a 180 m high hill. It is spread over 700 acres and has 22 water bodies, palaces, towers and temples. It also has two commemoration towers named Kirti Stambh, built to honor the first Jain Tirthankar and Vijay Stambh, built to commemorate Mohammed Khilji’s victory.

Mount Abu

One might think that Rajasthan is all about deserts, forts, and palaces but it also has one beautiful hill station which can be visited all year round. Mount Abu is a very popular holiday destination in India. It offers fantastic views of the plains from atop. It is treated as the summer capital of Rajasthan as the coniferous trees and flowering shrubs which cover the hillside keep the climate cool all year round. Mount Abu also has a three-day summer festival which comprises classical music and folk dance performances. Bikaner

Sariska National Park

Rajasthan is extremely rich and diverse when it comes to wildlife. It has some fine national parks and reserves and the Sariska is one of them. It is located at a short distance from Jaipur and is an extremely wonderful getaway for wildlife and especially tiger lovers. From grasslands to forests and rocky terrains to hill tops, Sariska has all kinds of topography and is perfect for a vacation amidst nature. Sariska National Park is also known to be larger than the other tiger reserves in India in terms of area. It is spread across an area of around 850 sq km. From the Bengal tiger to golden jackals, four-horned antelopes and sambars, Sariska has several species of wildlife. Sariska's success in animal conservations is all thanks to Maharaja Jai Singh of the princely state of Jaipur who in the 20th century, started a campaign to convert the region to a protected area. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1958 and eventually a national park in 1979. Since then, Sariska has remained a popular tourist attraction in India and a preferred weekend getaway from Jaipur and Delhi.

Distance from Jaipur: 122 km (approximately 2 hours 45 minutes)

Best time to go: Sariska is open all year round but it is best to avoid the scorching heat during summer in Rajasthan. So,October to March is the best time to visit Sariska National Park.

Where to stay: Sariskatiger camp (093140 17210) is perhaps the best choice for a comfortable stay with rooms starting at around Rs 4700 per night.

Sightseeing: Sariska National Park is the prime tourist attraction in Sariska. You can take the wildlife safari between 8 am to 6.30 pm when the park remains open. The safari timings are 6:00 am to 09:30 am and 03:00 pm to 07:00 pm during summers AND 06.00 am to 10.00 pm and 2:00 pm to 06.00 pm during winters. Sariska Palace in the park has now been turned into a hotel now but worth a visit. You can also check out the Kankwari fort and the Naldeshwar shrine in Alwar.

Osian

Osian is one of the most quaint temple towns you will see in India. It is best for those who like to visit temples and are looking for a budget trip or a short getaway. It is located very close to Jodhpur so can be covered as a circuit. Surrounded by beautiful hamlets and golden sand dunes, Osian is visited by a good number of tourists every year. Osian was an important trading center on the silk route between 8th and 12th century AD. It was also a major pilgrimage centre between the 6th and 11th century. Most of Osian lies in ruins as of today but it still gives you a glimpse of the history of this region. Osian is often referred to as the Khajuraho of Rajasthan. It actually forms an oasis in the great Indian Thar desert. It is a major pilgrimage center for the Oswal Jain community and its temples are known for their magnificent architecture.

Distance from Jaipur: 382 km (approximately 6 hours)

Best time to go: Osian, like most other parts of Rajasthan, is best during winter. So, the best time to visit Osian is from November to March. The temples in Osian are open all throughout the year but it is best to avoid Rajasthan during summer in order to stay away from the scorching heat.

Where to stay: Accommodation options in Osian are limited. There are several budget dharamshalas for pilgrims but nothing too lavish is available here. For those looking for better staying options, it is best to book a room at Jodhpur (see options above) and travel to Osian. Camel safaris can easily be arranged too.

Sightseeing: Thereare 16 prominent temples in Osian worth visiting.The most famous attraction in Osian is the Sachiya Mata temple which is visited by people from all across India. Other popular temples include Sun temple and Mahaveera Jain temple which date back to the 8th to the 11th century. These temples, especially the Sachiya Mata and Mahaveera temple, are known for their intricate carvings, and stand out on account of their grace and stunning architecture.

Tips to keep in mind: While Osian is mainly famous for its temples, you can also take camel safaris in the areas around Osian. Also remember that Osian is a predominantly vegetarian region and you may not find non-vegetarian food here. Restaurants here serve a sweet dish called before the meals. This process is called "mithi manuhar".
